Mesudiye Madrasa

Mesudiye Madrasa is a historical madrasa located in the Sur district of Diyarbakır.

Mesudiye Madrasa was built by the Artuqid Principality between 1198-1223. While the construction of the madrasah started in 1198 during the reign of Artuklu Melik Ebu Muzaffer Sökmen and was completed in 1123 during the time of Mevdud, nicknamed Melik Mesud, the plan of the madrasah was made by Master Cafer Bin Mahmud from Aleppo. According to the inscription of the madrasa, courses such as fiqh, medicine, physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry, literature and philosophy were taught.

While one of the entrances of the madrasah, which has two entrances, opens to the Ulu Mosque, the main gate of the madrasah is located in the north of the madrasah. There is a three-arched portico, one of which is large, to the south of the courtyard, which has a nearly square plan. It was built with cut stones and in the form of two floors. Rotating stone columns placed on both sides of the mihrab in the courtyard of the building were placed to detect the collapse that would occur in the building.
