Mor Yakup (Virgin Mary) Church
Virgin Mary Church, also known as Mor Yakup Church, is a historical church located in the Sur district of Diyarbakır. The church belongs to Orthodox Assyrians. The church, which is believed to have been built in the 3rd century, has been burned, destroyed and repaired several times until today. The church, which is estimated to have been built in the 3rd century, belongs to Orthodox Assyrians. There are a total of 14 inscriptions in the building complex, and these are the inscriptions of the repairs and additions of the buildings. The oldest of these inscriptions is dated 1533 and it is written that the building was renovated. The building was destroyed by fire in 1648 and 1297 AD, renovation in 1533, apse section in 1689, Mor Yakup section in 693, and additions were made in addition to repair and renovation in 1719, 1850, 1881 and 1914. The church took its current form with the restoration carried out between 2004-2005. It has a door dating back to the late Roman period and decorations on the altar from the Byzantine period, the remains of which can be traced. It consists of two courtyards. The main courtyard is the first courtyard entered from the outer gate. There is a church building in the east of the courtyard, buildings used as lodgings in the north and south, and an entrance gate and a small garden in the west. There is also a small ornamental pool in the courtyard. There is a door opening to the second courtyard from the southeast of the first courtyard. The second courtyard is used as the garden of the church and there is a garden in this courtyard. Apart from the garden, there are no structural or vegetal elements in the courtyard. The church is also covered with a single-centered brick dome
