Niksar Leylekli (Yılanlı) Bridge

Stork Bridge, also called Yılanlı Bridge; It is near the Arasta Mosque, on the Çanakçı Stream that runs through the city, south of Niksar Castle. The exact construction date of the bridge, which takes its name from the relief of the stork figure holding a snake in its mouth, on the keystone of the arch is unknown. Accepted opinion; It is said that it was built in the Roman period and used after being repaired in the Turkish period. Round single arch bridge, 20 m. long and 3.5 m. is wide. On both sides of the walking floor, there are railings that go down from the middle point towards the ends. In 1960, the municipality installed iron railings on the bridge railings. The arch of the arch was built with smooth cut stone, while the other parts were built with rubble. The depiction of a stork holding a snake in its mouth, made with the low relief technique that gave its name to the bridge, was carved on light colored limestone. The type and form of the stone being different from other stones; suggests that this decorated stone may have been placed here later, possibly during the Turkish period.
