Old Mosque
Eski Cami is a mosque located in the center of Edirne, Turkey. It is also known as the first original monumental structure to have survived to our time in Edirne. According to the inscription on the side door of the mosque, its architect is Hacı Alaaddin from Konya and its foreman is Ömer ibn-i İbrahim. The mosque has nine domes. The mosque has a minaret on the north and northeast sides. Its construction was started in 1403 by Süleyman Çelebi during the period known as the Interregnum in Ottoman history. It was completed by Mehmed I in 1414. Ottoman Sultan II. Ahmed and II. Sword-wielding ceremonies were held for Mustafa in this mosque. The mosque was damaged by fire in 1749 and earthquake in 1752; It was repaired during the reign of Mahmud I. After the foundation of the Republic, it was restored again in 1924-1934. II. Because of the respect for the memory of Hacı Bayram Veli, who came to Edirne during the reign of Murat and preached by entering the mosque, the preaching chair is not used by the imams. In addition, the Kaaba stone called Rükn-ü Yemani, which is rumored to have been brought from the Kaaba and located to the right of the mihrab, is a special visiting point. There are various inscriptions written in the 18th and 20th centuries on the white painted walls and piers of the mosque. Some of these were added during the reign of Mahmud I, and some were added during the restoration in 1863. In the following periods, the famous calligraphers of the time gave their writings here or wrote them instead. The gilded basmala on the right of the pulpit is also from the II. Abdülhamid's signature can be seen.
