Ortahisar Culture Museum

The museum was established in 1954 as the first touristic hotel of the Cappadocia Region, after the restoration works of the old “Göreme Hotel” building, which was built in Ortahisar. “Göreme Hotel” hosted many famous names who came to the region in those years. During a fire in the hotel, the hotel registry was burned and the information of that day cannot be accessed. But as far as is learned from the public, among these names; There are celebrities such as Yaşar Kemal, Kasım Gülek, Yılmaz Güney, Hulisi Kentmen, Çolpan İlhan, Ayhan Işık, Sadri Alışık, Türkan Şoray, Tarık Akan, and many foreign statesmen and artists.

Yaşar Kemal wanted to write a novel inspired by fairy chimneys during his stay in Göreme Hotel for about a month. He often chatted with Ahmet Köksal, who is still alive today, and asked, “My child, have you ever seen fairies around here?” . Ahmet Köksal, on the other hand, replied to Yaşar Kemal, “I have never seen a fairy.” Then Yaşar Kemal wrote his book “Fairy Chimneys” during his stay here and mentioned “Göreme Hotel” in that book.

There are 12 rooms in total in the museum and the traditional lifestyles of the people living in the Cappadocia Region are portrayed in an ethnographic language, with sculptures. How the rocks were carved into churches and houses, agricultural life and tools used in agriculture, old record roof (kitchen), molasses making, carpet and rug weaving, fabric printing techniques, Turkish bath, an old village square, village room, tradition of asking a girl , the henna night ceremony, the bridal room and a section where our visitors can take a photo of “Ortahisar Memories” at the final.
