Panayia Evangelistria Church

Panayia Evangelistria Church is a Greek Orthodox church located in the Dolapdere district of Beyoğlu district of Istanbul. The building, whose construction started in 1877, was opened to worship in 1893 after a six-year period. There is the Theotokos Holy Spring right next to the church entrance. The church building was registered as a 2nd degree urban protected area on May 12, 1979. The name of the church, which is composed of the words Panayia, the name of Mary in the Eastern churches, and evangelistria, the name of the myth that she will have children without marriage, means Annunciation of Mary. Built in the Russian architectural style, the rectangular church was built from two-colored Maltese stone in the Greek cross plan. There are two bell towers with pointed roofs on both sides of the building. The Russian bell, located in one of these towers and whose sound is considered special, was rung in 2005. The clock tower, which has a square prismatic and circular dial clock in the middle of the bell towers, has pointed pediments on all four sides, and its lower part is decorated with marble reliefs.
