Petra Fortress

Petra Fortress (Kajeti Fortress), located in the village of Tsikhisdziri, a coastal town in Adjara Region, and known to have been built for protection by the Byzantine Emperor John Strathegos in 535; At an altitude of 440 meters above sea level, its ruins are still accessible today.


The walls of the castle, which was used to control the ships passing through the Black Sea coast during the Byzantine period and therefore played an important role in the political life of Georgia, are 2.5 meters long.


The castle, which later played an important role in the Ottoman Period; It was also the scene of wars between Russians and Turks. It is said that 25 cannons were stationed here during the Crimean War. The Turkish-dominated village of Tsikhisdziri was returned to Georgia in accordance with the Treaty of Berlin signed in 1878. Also, the western part of the fortress exploded during the construction of the Baku-Batumi railway in the 19th century.
