Philadelphia (St. Jean Church)
Most of the ancient city in Manisa Alaşehir District remained under the modern settlement. Founded by Attalos Philadelphos, the 2nd king of Pergamon, Philadelphia was called “Little Athens” during the Roman Period due to the abundance of temples and festivals held in the city. The city, which preserved its importance during the Byzantine Period, was surrounded by a solid city wall during this period. During the excavations in Philadelphia, a theater and a temple dated to the Roman Period were unearthed. During the excavations in the theater, a large part of the stage building and a very small part of the sitting area were unearthed. One of the most magnificent monuments of the city is the Church of St. Jean, of which only three parts have been preserved. The basilica, which was built in the 6th century, underwent repairs in the following periods.
