Santissimo Rosario Church

In 1857, the land on which the church stands was purchased by the Italians, and in 1859 a church dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul was built on the land. Since the church was small in the following years, it was decided to build a larger one. The project, drawn by French architect Raymond Charles Péré, was not implemented due to disagreement on the price. The construction of the new church, designed by Italian engineer Luigi Rossetti, started on October 4, 1903. The church, which was completed at a cost of 120,000 francs with the contributions of the community, was opened for worship in 1904. The church, dedicated to the holy rosary of Mary, is used by the Dominican Order. The church, which was not affected by the 1922 Izmir Fire, was the only active church in the city in 1923. Repairs were made to the church in 1947 and 1969. The bell tower of the church collapsed in the earthquake that occurred on February 1, 1974. A reinforced concrete floor was added to the repaired tower in 1975.
