St. Nicholas Church

St. Nicholas Church is located in Güllübahçe, which was the old Greek settlement known as Gelebeç at that time.

It was built in the name of St. Nicholas (Santa Claus), one of the great saints of the Christian world, on top of another church located here by the Greeks residing in Gelebeç in 1821. It is the second church built in the name of Santa Claus in Anatolia.

The Izmir 2 Restriction was registered as a cultural property to be protected with the decision of the Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board, dated 20.05.1992 and numbered 2690. It was allocated to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 1998.

Located in two living areas and a garden, the structure has a solid structure. The church generally consists of a bell tower and osteophylactoid wings. The structure, made of uneven local stones, was built with coarse rubble stones. It is understood that some marble pieces were brought from Priene. For example, an Ionian head feature can be seen on the eastern façade. This shows that brick and wooden beams were used between the building blocks. More regular marble placements were used in the door, window and building corners. The same material was used for the bell tower, bone and garden walls. The second section inside the bell tower is made entirely of marble.

After the departure of the Greeks in 1922, it was used as a mosque for 25-30 years by the Turks who came with the exchange. It is understood that there was no physical intervention during the period when it was used as a mosque. But then, unfortunately, he sticks well to his conclusions based on what whistleblowers and more illegal digging have done. The destruction of these people in search of gold can be seen on the walls.
