Taşhan

Taşhan is one of Trabzon’s important historical structures, built between 1531 and 1533 by Trabzon Governor İskender Pasha. Constructed during the Ottoman period, the building served as a caravanserai and commercial hub for merchants traveling along regional trade routes.

The structure has survived to the present day through various restorations. Its walls are built from smoothly cut stone, reflecting the durability and craftsmanship typical of Ottoman architecture. The portico arches and vault dome are constructed with brick, adding both structural strength and architectural character.

Originally, the roof was covered with traditional alaturka tiles, but during restoration work in 1980, it was replaced with concrete mosaic covering. Despite these modifications, the building retains its historical identity and architectural significance.

Taşhan stands as a reminder of Trabzon’s historical role as a major trade center connecting Anatolia with the Caucasus and Silk Road routes. Today, it remains an important cultural landmark, attracting visitors interested in history, architecture, and the commercial heritage of the Ottoman era.

With its historical depth, traditional craftsmanship, and architectural value, Taşhan continues to represent Trabzon’s rich cultural and commercial past.
