Underground Salt City
The Salt Cave in Çankırı, where rock salt has been mined since the Hittite period, is gradually taking shape. Located approximately 20 kilometers from the city center, the Salt Cave, which has many galleries formed as a result of years of production, is now being prepared for tourism. The building housing the information desk, cafeteria, mosque, and restrooms—the first point of contact for visitors to the Salt Cave, which the Çankırı Municipality aims to develop as an “Underground Salt City”—has been completed.
In addition, the “Çankırı Underground Salt City Feasibility Report” project prepared by the Municipality of Çankırı received grant support under the 2019 Feasibility Support Program of the North Anatolia Development Agency (KUZKA). Under the signed protocol, a feasibility report will be prepared to contribute to the Salt Cave's inclusion in global tourism, increase the region's development and competitiveness, and generate ideas for Çankırı's promotion, brand value, and local development.
The interior design work for the Underground Salt City is ongoing.
