Yedi Churches

Seven Churches (Armenian: Վարագավանք Varakavank'), Varagavank or Varak Surp Cross monastery, is a historical Armenian monastery built in the 8th century, located in the village of Yukarı Bakraçlı, today in the center of Van. It was severely damaged in the 1915 Armenian Genocide and some parts of it were demolished by the governorship in the 1960s. The complex, which consists of seven separate churches and structures, was added to each other at different times. The oldest of the seven churches that make up the monastery, St. Sophia (Saint Sofia) church. It was built in the 8th century and only has an apse. The latter was built adjacent to its north wall and is nowadays the ruined St. John (Saint John) is the church.
