Zile Castle

Located on a mound in the center of Zile District, the castle is in a position dominating the Zile Plain. Today, there are architectural pieces and inscriptions from the Roman and Byzantine periods scattered around the castle. Based on these, the castle was built in the Roman Period in AD. It is thought to have been built in the first century. Before that, it is written in some sources that Mithriadates of Seleukos had a castle built here, and that this castle had underground passages and military-purpose structures. It is understood from an inscription dated 737 A.H. (1336) that the castle was repaired during the time of Ertena Bey, Alaeddin Bey, and a zawiya was built here with some additions. The castle was made of cut and rubble stone and its walls were strengthened with round bastions.
