It is approximately 20 km north of Denizli. Since there are many temples and religious buildings in Hierapolis, it is referred to as the Holy City in the archaeological literature. The ancient city is located among several historical sites. According to the ancient geographers Strabo and Ptolemy, Hierapolis was very close to Tripolis, on the border of Laodicea and Cario. Therefore, it became a Phrygian City. Although there is no information about the history of Hierapolis before the Hellenistic Period, we know that Hierapolis was a city before this date. It is called Hierapolis because of the mother goddess cult.
Information about Hierapolis is limited. The city was founded in 190 BC by the king of Pergamon II. Eumenes is known to have founded it. It was named Hierapolis after the Amazon Queen Hiera, the wife of Telephos, the founder of Pergamon. (Bergama is also called Pergamon or Pergamos).
