Sivriada

Island / Adalar, Turkiye, Marmara, İstanbul (Anatolia)

Sivriada

It is the westernmost of the archipelago known as the Islands off the coast of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara.

It is known as Sivriada because it consists of a sharp rock resembling a pyramid. The summit of Sivriada, which is a very small island and the sharp tip of a mountain jutting out of the sea, is 90 meters above sea level. It is 1.7 km away from Yassıada, the closest island, and 11 km away from the Istanbul coast (Fenerbahçe Cape). There is a fresh water well on the uninhabited island and a small port in the eastern part.

It is rumored that clergy and emperors were exiled to the island during the Byzantine Empire. There is a monastery on the island, dating back to the 10th century, of which only some ruins remain today. In recent years, Istanbul breakwaters and harbors were built from the stones quarried from the island. The quarry on the island has been abandoned. The quarry's harbor provides a good weekend shelter for yachtsmen.
