Aktaş Lake

Aktaş Lake (Hazapin) is a tectonic lake located on the border of Ardahan province and Georgia. Half of the lake is within the borders of Georgia. Of the lake with a total area of 27 km², 14 km² belongs to our country. The lake, with an altitude of 1,798 m, is within the borders of Çıldır district. The deepest part of the shallow lake is about 10 m. Georgia-Türkiye Aktaş border gate is located on the northern shores of the lake. The lake is mentioned under different names in sources; Hazapin, Kenarbel, Karsak, Kazapin. People around the lake call it Kenarbel because the lake can be reached after crossing a waist. It is mentioned as Kozapini in the Treaty of Moscow (1921). Hozapini is written on Georgian maps.
