Karamenderes (Skamander)
The Karamenderes River, formed by the streams carrying the rain and snow waters flowing from the peaks of the Kaz Mountains, forms a delta on the Anatolian side of the Dardanelles Strait and empties into the Dardanelles. It is possible to see many plant and animal species mentioned in Homer's epics here. Many of the war scenes mentioned in the Iliad took place around the Karamenderes River. Research shows that Troy had a coast to the sea 5000 years ago. Since the floods of Karamenderes River and Dümrek Stream filled the sea over the centuries, Troy lost its natural harbor feature.
