Samsun Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary

Also known as the Kizilirmak Delta Bird Sanctuary, it is the only wetland on the Black Sea coast of our country, with a total width of 56.000 hectares, with 20 lakes of various sizes and large marsh and reeds areas, with its natural features preserved to a large extent. It is of great importance not only for Turkey but also for the ecology of the whole world in terms of the number of birds it hosts. Declared as a wildlife development area, this area covers the counties of Ondokuz Mayıs, Bafra and Alaçam. The Kızılırmak Delta, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, is of vital importance for bird species that cross the Black Sea directly during migration. Approximately 35% of the 460 bird species registered in Turkey have been identified in the Kızılırmak Delta and approximately 15% of them breed here.
