Yeniçağa Lake
Yeniçağa Lake is a tectonic lake near the Yeniçağa district of Bolu province. The North Anatolian Fault line is effective in the formation of the lake. The lake area is 2.6 km² and its altitude is 989 m above sea level. The deepest part of the lake, whose waters are fresh, is 11 m and the average depth is 5 m. The length of the lake is 7 km and its width is 2.5 km. The water level of the lake changes seasonally depending on rainfall. The surroundings of the lake are reeds and swamps. Excess water of the lake is transferred to Büyüksu stream via Çağa Stream. The lake is located in the triangular-shaped Yeniçağa plain of 25 km². There are peatlands formed by the lake effect in areas close to the lake. Small streams coming from the east, west and northwest directions mix with the lake. Deliler stream flows into the lake from the east and Kuzuviran stream flows into the lake from the west. 9 hm³ of groundwater was detected in the plain. Commercial fishing is carried out in the lake by the fisheries cooperative. The lake area was reduced in size in 1954 to prevent malaria and in 1969 to prevent floods. The canal opened for this purpose was closed in 1990 when the lake level dropped too much.
