Assos Ancient Port
Assos Port is one of the most attractive places in Assos region. This is actually a handful of places consisting of narrow stone streets. Since it is a protected area, only the restoration of century-old stone structures is allowed. There are only touristic facilities in the port.
It is obvious that most of the hotels have emerged as a result of careful restorations in boutique style. It is possible to swim in the sea from the wooden piers in front of the facilities. The coast is full of fish restaurants. The tea garden opened by the headman, a couple of ice cream shops, stalls selling souvenirs, other details...
The harbor of centuries ago still preserves its ancient atmosphere. The red and green lanterns of the breakwater are placed on the columns of the ancient city. The ruins of the ancient harbor can still be seen. The breakwater, which was expanded by the Ministry of Culture in 2000, has been a shelter for many fishing boats. It has also become a tradition to sit on the mole and fish in the evenings.
The driveway leading down to the port is steep and winding. The port is closed to car entrance in summer. It's not a place to drive around anyway. There is a parking lot 50 meters from the port where you can park your car. From here you can walk everywhere.
Assos and Bonito Warehouses
Once upon a time, Assos was surrounded by acorn forests. Bonito, one of the important raw materials of the paint industry, was exported to foreign countries from the port of Assos in the 1950s. Stone masonry warehouse buildings were built to store acorns. Later, after the vinyl paint raw material was found, acorn lost its importance in the paint industry. Local people also cut oak trees and made charcoal. Lots of acorn trees are still visible around. Acorn is now used to naturally dye carpets and rugs. The bonito warehouses in Assos harbor have been restored and turned into a hotel.
