First Martyrs Monument
The monument, located on the left at the entrance of Seddülbahir Castle, was erected in memory of our first martyrs. British and French ships began to bombard the redoubts guarding the entrance to the Bosphorus on November 3, 1914, although there was no actual and official war against the Ottoman Empire yet. Gunpowder and cannonballs exploded when the ammunition depot of the bastion inside Seddülbahir Castle was hit. As a result of this attack, 5 officers and 81 privates and non-commissioned officers were martyred at their location. On the monument, on November 3, 1914, the British and French Navy bombarded Seddülbahir and Kumkale and martyred 5 officers and 81 soldiers in this place. This event is important in that the allies actually declared war against the Ottoman Empire, gave excessive confidence to the idea of the Gallipoli Campaign they were creating, announced the necessity of reinforcing the defense of the Dardanelles in the Ottoman Empire, gave its first martyrs, and was the pioneer of the Gallipoli Campaign. May the souls of our dear martyrs rest in peace... Çanakkale has not been passed, and it will not be passed. Statements dated 18 March 1986 are included. The monument was restored by the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs in 2013. The actual burial area of our martyrs who died in the attack in question is the martyrs' cemetery, known as Seddülbahir Ammunition Martyrdom, located on the right side of the road leading to the port and adjacent to the wall of the Castle.
