Konya Ataturk Monument
Konya Atatürk Monument is the second monument of the Republic of Turkey, after Sarayburnu Atatürk Monument. The 1926 monument, commissioned by the Austrian sculptor Heinrich Krippel, is placed on the Government Square in Konya Istasyon Street.
After the Konya Municipality Council decided to build a Mustafa Kemal Atatürk monument in 1924, İstasyon Street in the west of the city was found suitable. It was decided to use the Konya Ziraat Monument, which was built by Architect Muzaffer Bey in 1917 as an Agricultural Monument in the square, as a pedestal. Constructed by Heinrich Krippel, who is also the sculptor of the Ankara Victory Monument, the Konya Atatürk Monument was opened with a great ceremony in 1926 on the Republic Day. At the opening, two young girls, one representing "Liberty" and the other "Republic", were dressed in white tulle on both sides of the statue.
