Martyr Sancaktar Mehmetcik Monument

While visiting the battlefield on August 31, 1922, Atatürk saw among the martyrs a banner bearer buried in a hole made by an enemy artillery shell. This saintly martyr was holding the banner upright with his stiff arm above the soil. The Commander-in-Chief, touched by the sight, orders that this symbol be taken for the Martyr Soldier Monument to be built after the war.
