Historical Bekteşbey Mosque
Bektas Bey Mosque in Sarpkaya village / This mosque was built by Bektas Beg / the son of Trabzon Governor Çeçenzade Hacı Hasan / Pasha from Karahisar-i Şarki dynasty. Sene 1234 (1818-1819) This mosque, named after Bektaş Bey, has a rectangular plan and is long towards the qibla. There is also a last congregation place. The mosque is 15x 10 feet from outside to outside. The outer walls are built very thick (about 1 meter) with cut stone. Wooden beams were placed around the perimeter to provide resistance against earthquakes. The edges of the lower windows were shaped with stone jambs, niches were opened and iron crenellations were placed outside. Root paint was used in the ornamentation works used in the construction of the mosque.
Built 200 years ago, it is said that Bektaş Bey, who was sent to the Kelkit basin by Trabzon Bey due to the success of Bektaş Bey Mosque during the futuhat, built this mosque during the Kelkit Valley Principality.
The mosque built by Bektaş Bey, which is the oldest and historical mosque of our region, has survived to the present day in its original form. The mosque, which is understood to have been built during the classical period of the Ottoman Empire, preserves its feature of being one of the oldest mosques of our region.
