Zeytinburnu Mosaic Museum

Kazlıçeşme Art was restored between 2015-2018. During the restoration, a mosaic from the Late Roman - Early Byzantine period was found on the floor. The largely intact mosaic was reported to the Istanbul Archaeological Museums Directorate. It was covered with glass and made suitable for exhibition with the decision to preserve it on site.

The mosaic is important as it is the largest example found outside the city walls in Istanbul. Considering that the figure continued outside the building, the Directorate of Istanbul Archaeological Museums was applied to.

As a result of the excavations carried out under the supervision of the Directorate, the entire mosaic was reached in 2019. In 2021, a burial chamber, a sarcophagus and skeletons were found in the area.

This place was transformed into a Mosaic Museum to be a new witness for the history of Istanbul.

In the center of the polychrome (multicolored) mosaic panel made with the opus tessellatum technique, there is an octagram main motif placed in a circle with wave and weave motif borders. The composition is enriched with interlocking knot motifs surrounding this main form, a combination of triangles and squares surrounded by parallel sides, and geometric motifs placed inside the circles. In the central circle within the octagram, a floral motif is formed with triangles in green, brown, orange and purple on a light background.
