Nasreddin Hodja Village
Nasreddin Hodja, one of the philosophers of Turkish-Islamic Culture, great sage and master of laughter, was born in 1208 in Hortu Village of Sivrihisar District of Eskişehir, now Nasreddin Hodja Neighborhood. Nasreddin Hodja, who received his primary education from his father, who was a religious official, later continued his education in Sivrihisar and Konya Madrasas. After serving as imam and preacher in his village and Sivrihisar, he went to Akşehir to complete his scientific education. Here he took lessons from well-known scholars and sages of his time such as Seyyid Mahmut Hayrani and Seyyid Hacı İbrahim Veli.
Nasreddin Hodja is a folk philosopher of our national culture. He is known and loved in the Turkic and Islamic world. He is known as Molla Nasreddin in Azerbaijan, Koja Nasreddin in Kazakhstan and Nasreddin Efendi in Uzbekistan.
The first written Nasreddin Hodja story is found in the Saltukname of Abu'l Hayr Rumi, dated 1480, which tells the life of Sauk. 'Saltukname' was completed and published in 1480 by Abu'l Hayr Rumi as a result of seven years of work by Abu'l Hayr Rumi upon the instruction of Cem Sultan, the son of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror, during his princedom. While there were 43 jokes in the first book written about Nasreddin Hodja (Hikayat-i Kitab-ı Nasreddin), 112 in the book written in 1676, 160 in 1822, and 445 Nasreddin Hodja jokes were identified in 1958.
Unesco declared 1996 as the Year of Nasreddin Hodja. Within the scope of the year, which was celebrated with various events, special publications or special issues of magazines, symposiums were organized in our country. Sivrihisar is important in terms of being the land that witnessed both the birth and death of Nasreddin Hodja. Apart from the house of our Hodja in Sivrihisar, which shows his connection with Eskişehir, his grave was also found in the recent excavations.
Nasreddin Hodja Festivals are organized every year between June 3-10.
