Kütahya Caravanserai Ceramics Bazaar

In addition to being the most important branch of art in Kütahya, tile making is also an important source of income for the people. Ceramic production, which started with the Hittites in Kütahya, showed continuous improvement until the end of the Ottoman period. Ceramic art in Kütahya started with red paste material in the last half of the 14th century. Its motifs and colors are similar to the Iznik tiles of that period. Cobalt blue, manganese purple, turquoise and black colors were used in these early examples. The colors are in darker tones compared to the Iznik works, and with this feature, they are similar to the Anatolian Seljuk tiles. A brand new, magnificent style begins with white, hard-paste porcelain-like blue-white ceramics instead of red paste. The earliest example is the single glazed bricks on the minaret of the Kütahya Kurşunlu Mosque dated 1377. It is seen that Kütahya Tiles are used in architectural works made in Istanbul and other important centers.
