Çanakkale Synagogue

Synagogue / Turkiye, Marmara, Çanakkale

Çanakkale Synagogue

The only synagogue in the city, the building on Büyük Hamam Street, also known as Eski Havra Street, was first built as a mansion and later converted into a synagogue. The building was used for military needs during World War II and was returned to the community in September 1945. The synagogue, which was restored in April 1964, was used for eleven years, after which it could not be used for regular worship for thirty years because the Jewish population in the city had decreased significantly. On October 29, 2005, the synagogue was reopened for worship with a religious ceremony attended by former Çanakkale residents from Istanbul and abroad.
