Etz Hayim Synagogue
This name, which means Tree of Life, is found in many synagogues in Byzantine and Ottoman times. It is known that there was a synagogue in Ortaköy, probably with the same name, since ancient times. After the 1660 and 1718 Istanbul fires, new families migrated and settled in this neighborhood. It is understood from the wills related to repair permits that the synagogue suffered fire disasters in 1703 and 1813 and suffered great damage.
