İtalian Synagogue
Following serious disagreements between the administrators of the Galata Jewish Community and its foreign members over the accrual of fees for services such as weddings and funerals, some members, mostly of Italian nationality, left and founded a new community. Founded in 1862 under the auspices of the King of Italy, the "Istanbul Jewish Community of Spanish-Portuguese Foreigners", then known as the Comunita Israelitico-Straniera di Constantinopoli, first acquired a place in Karaköy and started to use it as a synagogue. Upon the decision of the Board of Directors of the Congregation to build a new synagogue, the land on Şair Ziyapaşa Yokuşun, where the synagogue is currently located, was purchased.
