Hasan Can Tomb

His tomb is located in the hazira to the right of the stairs leading from the Green Mosque to the Green Tomb.He was the father of the statesman, sheikhulislâm and historian Hoca Sâdeddin Efendi. What is known about his life is based on the information given by Hoca Sâdeddin Efendi in his famous work Tâcü't-tevârîh. His family name, Hasan Can b. Hâfız Mehmed b. Hâfız Cemâleddin Isfahânî, indicates that his family was from Isfahan. His father, Hâfız Mehmed, traveled to Tabriz upon the invitation of the Safavid ruler Shah Ismâil, and after Yavuz Sultan Selim entered Tabriz following the victory of Çaldıran (1514), he was among the scholars and artisans he brought to Istanbul. Hasan Can's presence with his father at this time suggests that he was born in Tabriz. When Hâfız Mehmed came to Istanbul, he was assigned as a court scribe.

His son Hasan Can, who was taken into the private service of Yavuz Sultan Selim II, became one of the closest men of the sultan and participated in the Egyptian campaign with him.Hasan Can witnessed many events during this service, which lasted for six years until Yavuz Sultan Selim's death, and shared the most confidential secrets with him. At a time when his illness was getting worse, in response to Yavuz Sultan Selim's question, “Hasan Can, what is this?”, he said, “My Sultan, it is time to turn to Allah Almighty and be with Him.” The sultan's words, “And who have you known us with all this time?” are recorded in history books.Hasan Can, who was also known as a singer and composer, is understood to have taught music at the Enderun as part of his salary. The works composed by Hasan Can were played continuously by the mehter teams in later periods. Three of his hüseynî peşrevs in düek style have survived to the present day.
