Babakale

Babakale is a village in the Ayvacık district of Çanakkale province.

The village has had the same name since 1912. The first written source where the location of the village is mentioned is Piri Reis's Kitab-ı Bahriye dated 1521.

Babakale Castle, also known as Hırzü'l-Bahr Castle, is known as the last castle built during the Ottoman period. The castle was built by Kaymak Mustafa Pasha between 1722-1729 to protect the settlement from the attacks of European pirates. It is thought that other structures such as baths, fountains and mosques in the castle were built in the same period with the castle. Depending on the construction of the castle, a knife-making culture was formed in the village, which continues to this day.
