Bodrum Bogazici

After turning right at the 25th kilometer of the Milas-Bodrum highway and going 2 km, the Bogazici Village is reached. The mythological name of Bogazici Village is Bargylia. Bargylia is located on a hillock on a small peninsula formed by a narrow and deep bay (Varvil), which used to open to the Gulf of Iasos in the north of the Bodrum peninsula, south of the Gulf of Gulluk, but today it is filled. The word Bargylia, according to Prof. Bilge Umar, came from Luwi in 2000 BC or Carian in 1000 BC, meaning “high place”.

The name of the city was first found in the tax lists paid to the Attica-Delos Sea Union in the V century BC. After Alexander the Great conquered Caria, he used the city as a base. After the III century BC, the city showed great development. We learn from Strabo that the city had the temple of Artemis Kindyas during this period. It also made a name for itself in the Hellenistic Age, and the navy of the Pergamon Kingdom also benefited from the harbor of Bargylia. After the peace of Apameia, Bargylia came under the sovereignty of Rhodes, but after a short time it sided with Rome. During this period, the city minted coins. In the Christian era, it was a bishopric center.
