The old name of the settlement is "Dirgona". In the Ottoman census of 1530, there is no mention of settlement among the villages of the district of Of at that time. In the Avarız Book of 1681, 8 Avarız soldiers, all Muslim, were recorded in the village named "Tirgona". After the establishment of the Republic of Turkey; The name of the settlement, which was recorded as Dirgane in the 1935 census, Dirgone in the 1940 census and Dirgona in other censuses, was changed to Doğançay in 1959 with the law no. 7267 on the grounds that "it was of foreign origin and caused confusion" and started to be included in the records with its new name as of the 1960 census.
