Kalkan

Kalkan

Kalkan is a coastal settlement located in the Antalya Province of Türkiye, administratively part of the Kaş district. Historically a village, Kalkan is today a well-known tourism destination distinguished by its preserved architecture, natural scenery, and international visitor profile.

History

The history of Kalkan dates back to antiquity. The area lies within the territory of the ancient Lycia civilization. During the Ottoman period, the settlement was known as Kalamaki and functioned primarily as a small port and trading village. Until the mid-20th century, Kalkan remained a quiet fishing village, before transforming rapidly with the rise of tourism from the 1980s onward.

Geography and Climate

Kalkan is built on steep slopes descending from the Taurus Mountains toward the Mediterranean Sea. The region experiences a typical Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Sea temperatures remain suitable for swimming over a long tourism season.

Population and Settlement

While the permanent population is relatively small, it increases significantly during the summer months due to domestic and international tourism. A notable proportion of visitors come from European countries, many of whom stay for extended periods.

Economy

The local economy is largely based on tourism. Accommodation facilities, villa rentals, restaurants, yachting, and diving activities constitute the main sources of income. Agriculture and fishing continue on a smaller scale as secondary economic activities.

Tourism and Places of Interest

Kalkan is an important center for both coastal and cultural tourism.
